Dr. Deb's Bio
Dr. Debbie Oro has been privileged to live the American Dream. Growing up in the tiny farm town of Mascoutah Illinois, education was not a priority for her parents and grandparents generation. Even though neither of her parents graduated from high school school, Debbie excelled academically and was able to attend the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. She graduated with a degree in Honors Biology from the U of I in 1975.
Dr. Oro was recognized for her outstanding academic achievement by being accepted by the prestigious Harvard School of Dental Medicine. After her first year at Harvard, Debbie was honored by the offer of an internship at the world famous National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda Maryland. Based on the excellence of her performance she was selected to participate in pain control research at the National Institutes of Dental Research.
Dr. Oro transferred to the University of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia where she was certain she would be assured a top notch “patient care” education. At that time Penn was a world leader not only in oral health but overall health care studies and soon became known as an innovator for the understanding of total oral rehabilitation with an eye toward esthetics.
While at Penn Debbie was accepted to the Co Step program in Alaska. During the summer between her Junior and Senior years, Dr. Oro went to the Public Health hospital in Kotzebue, Alaska, a small fishing village on the western border of Alaska north of the Arctic Circle. Dr. Oro treated the Native American population in the village and sometimes flew in tiny two seater planes to the remote areas to treat patients for emergencies.
After graduation Debbie continued her education at an inner city hospital in Brooklyn, New York. She completed a general practice residency at Lutheran Hospital Medical Center in 1980. Dr. Oro’s residency included treatment of patients with a variety of medical conditions and in need of all types of dental procedures.
In 1985 Dr. Oro was recognized for her commitment to continuing education when she received her Fellowship of Academy of General Dentistry in Detroit Michigan.
Dr. Deb and her husband purchased a practice in Cortlandt Manor, N. Y. in 1981. Their practice was in an affluent suburb of NYC in the northwestern part of Westchester County. She practiced general dentistry while at the same time doing groundbreaking work in the origins of esthetic dentistry. It was in the middle of the 1980’s that porcelain restorations, including laminates, were first being utilized.
Dr. Deb’s work with esthetic dentistry resulted in requests for her to teach and lecture on the subject. Beginning in the early 1990’s she began lecturing to local dental societies in the greater New York City area. By the middle of the 1990’s she was honored to speak at national dental Meetings in Chicago, Salt Lake City, Philadelphia and New York.
Dr. Oro is a proud mom to her children Philip and Anna. Deb has been deeply involved with public education in our area. She has served on the site council at Copper Creek elementary (6 years) and Cross Middle School (3 years). She is honored to have served on Amphitheater School district’s Superintendent Community Council for the past 5 years.
Dr. Deb is a proud parent of Phillip and Anna. Her exemplary community service is documented on the “Our Service to the Community” page under “About Drs. Oro”. Dr. Deb enjoys walking, jogging, lifting weights, gardening, and reading. |
