The Oro Dental Story

Dr. Bob's Bio
Dr. Bob Oro is the grandson of an Italian immigrant who came to this country at the beginning of the 20th century. On arriving at Ellis Island Bob’s grandfather, an orphan, decided to change his given name of Frank Zucharelli to Frank Oro to celebrate his new country, “The Land of Gold.” (Oro in Italian)

Dr. Oro is a product of the NYC public school system. He grew up in Flushing, NY and received a degree in Economics with Honors from Queens College of the City University of NY in 1974. Dr. Bob followed his dream of becoming a dentist by starting dental school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico.  While in school in Guadalajara he was one of the leaders in his class who established a “Free Dental Clinic” in the San Francisco Church. The free clinic served the very poor who lived on the outskirts of the city to the north.

After scoring in the top 7% in the second year dental school American National Boards, Dr. Oro became the first American to attend a foreign dental school and transfer directly to an Ivy League dental school. Dr. Oro graduated from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine in 1979.

After dental school Dr. Oro was among 180 of the top dental graduates in the Eastern US to apply to the general practice residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn NY. He was one of only three accepted into the rigorous two year training program located in the notorious ghetto that is East New York / Brownsville sections of Brooklyn NY.  Brookdale’s two year general practice residency has the reputation of being one of the most stringent and diverse medically based residencies in the country. All facets of dentistry were taught in a very high power setting.  Each resident worked the emergency room for 24 hours every five days. The residents were responsible for all traumas to the lower half of the face. They participated in programs which dealt with implant research and restoration and spent at least one half day a week treating patients with oral and medical needs requiring the operating room setting.

After his residency program Dr. Oro purchased a practice in the affluent suburb of Westchester County just north of NYC. Cortlandt Manor was home for Dr. Oro and his now growing family from 1981-1996. During that time Dr. Oro was an instructor at Brookdale Hospital for three years and the founder of the Brookdale Dental Alumni Association.

Continuing his passion for learning Dr. Oro attained his Fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry in Detroit in 1985. In 1988 Dr. Oro became the youngest dentist ever to receive the Academy of General Dentistry’s highest honor, Master of the AGD at the convocation in Chicago, Illinois. Only 1% of general dentists nationwide have attained Mastership and there are only two in the greater Tucson area.

Dr. Oro began teaching dentists on a national scale in 1994. He lectured nationally until 1999. His proudest achievement was being the strategic planner, organizer and moderator of the “Great Debate--Managed Care vs. Traditional Dentistry.” This was the first attempt to bring both sides of this controversial issue together for the benefit of the patient.  The seminar brought the leading authorities with opposing viewpoints together to advise dentistry how we would best serve our patients in the new millennium.

Drs. Oro made a life altering decision in 1994 to try to find the best place to raise their family and eventually retire. After researching 13 major cities they chose to move to Oro Valley in June of 1996. They opened their practice at the present location in Oro Valley in April, 2000.

Drs. Oro are proud to say that their practice has been the only completely independent / community based dental practice in the Tucson area. Their vision was to educate and treat patients without the influence of decisions made by a third party (insurance).  They have no “agreements” with insurance companies and are on no insurance lists to attract patients. Drs. Oro’s practice is an innovative/traditional practice where patients come to the practice because of the doctors’ high level of training, expertise, experience and community involvement.

Dr. Oro has been elected to serve as an alternate delegate to the Arizona Dental Association Board of Delegates 2006 to present.

His exemplary community service is documented on the “Our Service to the Community” page under “About Drs. Oro”.

Dr. Bob enjoys walking, jogging, lifting weights, reading, and learning. He is an all around sports fanatic.
